Default Black Bear died and some sunsets......well just another day at the office

Just got back a day or so ago, spent 10 days out with a grizzly/black bear client, about 5 of those days were spent in a tent...luckly we had books (not enough) an Ipad (not enough battery) and stories (plenty of those..). We didn't find any grizz, saw tracks in the snow that cruised thru in fog near a lookout, but did manage to drop this 7'3" black bear one afternoon and watch the june sun take a sleep....sometimes lifes just good.

very very skinny bear, june they seem to be at their lowest in mass and weight, hide was fairly loose on him, which is pretty normal this time of year. if you look close you can see the bullet hole right below his nostrels....

nips were in good shape, thanks for asking! lol
he turned just at the crest of the hill to my yell and his face was right over the front half of his shoulder and the bullet started at the nose and went out the other side of his neck, he was looking back pretty much.
needless to say the nose shot didn't finish him....he needed another.
i would not have ate this bear for sure, he meat smelled....bad.

The kill zone on a bear head is fairly small. Additionally, a shot in the skull will likely ruin the skull for any record book entry possibility and also ruin the skull for having it cleaned, bleached, and sitting on the mantle, or in the trophy room.
I would assume that Jake, and other guides don't often suggest head shots to clients.

    Jake,

Nice looking bear and an even better sunset. You say the bear smelled bad. What kind of bad?

ya the head shot was not on purpose, he just happened to shoot a tad left and the bear was turned looking back and took it in the kisser. no advice to clients on takin' a head shots..they gotta be just right to work and just wrong to make everything fall apart...

smelled bad like rotten fishy meat, not like a nice meaty smell but an off racid fish smell to it. i'd rather eat fall blue berry bears than spring soakin' in their own fat bears....

I agree a paying client is not going to want to hit it in the head. I disagree that a cratered bear skull is not going to look good on display. It will no doubt be a conversation piece with most who see it the first time I'm not looking to be in any record books either.

Interesting. And I thought the story would have gone something like.......... There I was in the tent when this black bear came crashing throught the side! Oh well. Still a beautiful bear.

    Thanks Jake!

    Nice bear!

I've got to get one of those fall bears everyone is talking about as they seem to get the greater accolades than the spring ones.

This post got me to thinking.. so it's good to know about the stink of the meat at the time the bear was harvested.

The bears in my area seem quite the tasty .... so I would imagine them berry bears that are soaking in their fat from the previous falls berries... rather than one that feasted on fish until the last days of fall.
