The Fish and Game web site said last year on June 16th they had about 5000 counted and this year they have a 999. They have not updated daily and it is still early.

Fish and Game can't seem to update their Fish Counts. Last update for the Nush was a week ago. People have been catching below Portage. So fish are moving in.

I talked to them yesterday, and they said there are so many fish that it broke the sonar...

    I wish

No, really there's a system glitch and they're working on it.

There's good news and there's bad news.

The good news is they told me as of the 19th there were 7800 fish past the sonar. Last year it was 5,510 so it's a little better.

The bad news is they'd like to see 13,000 by this date. Either way, wifey and I will be there July 1st.

Just got back from the nush. First 2 days fishing was good, however lots of small fish. Son picked up a 30 pounder which was big fish for the trip. Last 2 days were very sunny and hot. fishing shutdown, went out this morning and a front had moved in but fishing was dismal. Very few fish picked up at camp today. Overall between the 3 of us we caught about 100+ kings. One chum and a grayling.

Wow, 100+ king salmon on a multiple day trip between 3 people.....consider yourself very lucky, espescially this year! Have fished the Nush before during good returns and it was a blast! It's nice fishing a king salmon stream with very little pressure compared to say....the Kenai River.

Now for the real scoop. Caught 1 30 pounder. 1, 25 pounder, 1, 22 pounder, 5-6 fish in the 15-19 pound range. Everything else was below 14 pounds. Probably caught 30 jacks. Way smaller than 20 inches. Seems like this year there was a lot more smaller fish compared to last year.

Default Nush joins the EO parade

    Here we go again....

    http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm...1655&year=2012

To ensure that the projected spawning escapement does not fall below 40,000 fish, the plan directs the Department to restrict the king salmon sport fishery in the Nushagak River when the department projects the total inriver run will be less than 55,000 fish. Through June 25, approximately 40 percent into the run, an estimated 22,000 king salmon have passed the Portage Creek sonar. Because of uncertainty associated with the king salmon assessment portion in the Portage Creek sonar program, the department is unable to project at this date that the inriver run of king salmon will exceed 55,000 fish. Due to low returns of Nushagak king salmon in recent years and poor performance of king salmon stocks statewide in 2012, a conservative approach is warranted to slow down the Nushagak sport harvest.

Well, we're already packed and ready to leave on Friday. The good news is there's a metric crap load of chums, so we'll have fun regardless.
