    Default Guide gun velocity ????

I went out this morning to chronic some loads for my 45-70 guide gun. This was my load: CCI 250, 57.5 grains H335 "book max is 58" 400 gr Speer, Remington cases. This was the most accurate load at 50 yards with this gun. Here are the chrno results
    1. 1820
    2. 1838
    3. 1817
    4. 1818
    5. 1814
    6. 1829

That gives me a average of 1822. I found this hard to believe, because the book list the FPS 1870 with a 22" barrel. Did I just get lucky and get a really fast barrel? I was hoping for around 1650 but far above that. I also had no pressure signs what so ever and it groups great. Can some explain this numbers. Also I did use the right data for the marlin 1895 and not the data for the ruger number 1.

Big straightwalled cartridges like the 45\70 don't loose or gain a whole lot of speed after around 16-18" of bbl. I only give up 25-75fps with my 20" 458WM using the same charges as the books 24" bbl. Sounds like you have a good load, good luck in the fall

Thanks. It just had me wondering. I was expecting to lose 200fps or so. Looks like I need to kill a moose with it now
