    Default Sheep vs Wolf

Every once in a while you find yourself at the right place and time to see something amazing. This weekend a friend and I took a quick hike up in Denali NP and just happened to find ouselves with a front row seat to watch a black wolf try to make a stalk on a dall sheep. In the picture the ram is down on a rock ledge facing the camera but just prior he was standing up on the rock knob straight above, at the same elevation as the wolf. The wolf was laying in wait behind the rock that is just to the wolf's right. When the wolf popped out the ram made a quick escape over the edge.

The ram had an injury, a cut on his side down by the belly line. I don't know if the wolf had made a previous attempt at the sheep and was the cause of the cut. The cut was in a location that would make sense of where a wolf bite would be. The injury could also have come from a fall or elsewhere and the wolf was just trying to capitalize on the opportunity of injured prey.

Will be many years before I see something like this again, if ever.

That's an awesome picture. I would have loved to have seen that. I just finished reading Alaska wolf-man. If you haven't read yet I recommend it.

    P.S.
Be ready for some hiking/hunting/fishing when I get home.

    That is pretty awesome.

Imagine if the season was open and Mr. Ram was legal. I'd call that a 2'fer. and of course you weren't in the park...
That would be a good day!
