Thread: Discharging waste (sewage) in Prince William Sound

Default Discharging waste (sewage) in Prince William Sound

Not something that I'm personally worried about because my holding tank has to be pumped out (no macerator, no Y valve), but I was told last weekend during my Coast Guard Auxiliary courtesy inspection that the 3-mile rule for dumping waste does not apply to Prince William Sound. Meaning that you can be 3 or more miles from land in PWS, but it doesn't matter because you can't dump your tank anywhere in PWS. Makes it tough to comply when you launch out of Whittier because the pumpout station that was easily accessible and free to everyone is no longer there and now it costs (I think) to pump out and it's more of an ordeal. Personally, I have a way to pump my tank into my system at home.

I think they gave you some bum information. The 3 mile rule does apply to PWS, the only problem is trying to find an area that is 3 miles from land. It is ironic that you can do your business in a bucket and toss it overboard but you can not discharge waste from a boat holding tank. I think the cost of puming waste out at Whittier Harbor is something like $80, evrything is golden crap in Whittier!!!

I always wondered the same thing. I have my holding tank too, but I can squat on the beach at low tide or piss overboard and it's fine, but push a button is a no no? Hmmmm. I can see big passenger boats or ships, but???????

Look at your charts. The 3 nautical mile line DOES NOT exist inside PWS (it follows west of Montegue and Hinchinbrook Islands). No dumping in PWS.

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around does it make a sound?

No but it does leave a stinky brown streak behind your vessel viewable by passing aircraft......

PWS is considered inland waters and protected.

Why would you want to discharge waste anyway? Even dogs don't go in their food dish!

Holy crap batman! $80 to pump? Really. Well Washington and Oregon got that part right. Through a grant from NOAA, (I think) they have installed pump outs throughout the PNW and it is FREE! Yep free........ Several on the Columbia River.

That is an incentive to pump your crap.

Whittier used to have a free pumpout. Seward has multiple free pumpouts. Now Whittier charges for a pumpout. No wonder Whittier acts constipated
