    Default Check your flare dates!!

Just a quick reminder to get everyone to check the expiration date on their flares and other safety gear. Seems like someone gets a ticket for this every Memorial Day..

Be safe and have a great weekend.

I save my old ones, I just place them in a separate ziplock bag and mark them as EXPIRED TRAINING ONLY.

I keep them all together. CG doesn't mind as long as you have non expired ones.

Yeah, good reminder. I am sure we can all plan on getting checked by the brown shirts this weekend. Easier to pick this stuff up now than deal with a ticket later.

I get a courtesy auxiliary Coast Guard inspection/sticker most years hoping that it keeps the Coast Guard from boarding me. Got the sticker last weekend, so we'll see.

I asked the CG in Seward, several years ago, how to dispose of the expired flares. They told me "keep em". They may be expired but they could still work ... in an emergency.

how many does a guy really need though? I've got a ziplock full (about 30) of expired flares on board. Eventually, I need to make some go away.

    Good reminder Steve,
Maybe we could set off the old ones Jan 1 in leiu of fireworks........I am starting to aquire a collection as well..........Probably something ilegal about using them unless in a emergency, but maybe could get away with it on new years........

I bought new ones yesterday at walmat, $20 cheaper than sportsmans. Its crazy how much these things cost and still have a shelf life.

Three years from the date of manufacture.
When you do buy new ones check the dates so you get some that have a full three years left.
Sometimes the ones on sale aren't such a deal if they expire in a year.

Good reminder. The Trooopers were out in force last weekend in PWS and at the Whittier boat launch. They were writing tickets left and right for all times of things.

I was boarded by the troopers two weekends before memorial day and had expired flares and they just gave me a warning as everything else was in order and I was friendly with them. they were interested in seeing the bear we had harvested but again all was in order. I thanked them for their service they are just doing their job and would be happy to see them in a time of need.

Thanks for the tip! I checked my flares before heading out this weekend and they were all past expiration date. I'm almost ashamed by how long..... Guess I've had the boat longer than I thought.

One way to get rid of expired flares (if you have too many) is to have a flare party. You have to fill out some USCG paperwork and permission, but then you and as many friends that also have expired flares get together and practice. Proper way to hold flares, difference between holding the flare straight up as opposed to an angle.

Plus it gets the admiral and the kids experience in case you do have to use those old expired flares in a real emergency.

Come to think of it, don't we have a Coastie member here???? Maybe he can give us more info??

4th of July is also a good time. I can only imagine that if flares are burned for practice on the water that another boater will come to help, even if the CG is aware of the activity.

Maybe, but the CG announces it on Channel 16 several times the day of the event.
