Default 2012 Copper River Trip Report Thread

Getting excited about the upcoming season again. We'll be headed down on the 14th of June for our first trip. We plan to spend 3-4 days there and have family coming down on the 15th. Hoping for strong numbers during the first week of June! If we don't limit, we'll head back down sometime in July or August.

Sounds real good. It should be pretty interesting how river conditions are affected by the amount of snowpack from the winter and our current run of beautiful weather.

Gut feeling is that hordes of salmon are gonna make a run for it early before we have a chance to get it together. Then, the record snowpack is gonna unleash and turn the Copper into a continuous maelstrom. Hoping I'm just wrong.

That'd be my general guess for how things will shape up on the river this year, too. Fish early or fish late, cause I think there's going to be high-water issues.

We'll be going to the Copper next Thursday (7th) and also the week you will be going. We will see you there - are you dipping above the bridge or below in the canyons? We are now eyeballing the numbers and are getting real excited!

The wife does not get off work until Wednesday morning so we will be heading out the second she hits the door. Game plan is to get down to O'Brian Creek and get out for the overnight, provided Hem is transporting people out for the start of the opener. The numbers look really good!

Should be good a good dip this next coming weekend.
We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks anywhere that we may be placed

Were hitting the opener this year as well. We've never gone out there, is it worth it to pay for the charter or is there good dipnetting on foot?

If you are fishing the canyons, I'm not the best authority to ask, as we fish above the bridge. My understanding is that a lot of people take a charter service to the canyons. I'm sure someone can chime in with a correct answer for ya....

I suspect that unless you're there a few days before hand, Hem's charter is going to be packed. They have only so many holes and spots they can drop people, so they do actually run out of room and stop taking people out. You may have to sit an extra day waiting in line. You can use that time to try from shore. There are a few spots you can walk to, but again, I would expect them to be staked out well in advance of the opener. The plus side is if the fishing is good, people will limit quickly and holes will open up quickly, so you may have a fair shot of getting one from shore. Most of the hikers go to the O'Brien Creek trailhead and walk, but lots of people take ATV's down there, too, which would be a huge help. I've even seen some mountain biker-dippers going down there.

It's a LOT of work hauling all of those fish, so I prefer the charter. Maybe I'm just getting old and lazy, but it's too much work for me since I'm often by myself filling my family's quota. The money spent on the charter is well worth it in my book.

There's a lot of guys younger than me, that's for sure, so some of them are that. And then there's the other category....

LOL! Is that the AOD Flag? Well, I'll just have to dig mine out & wave it right back at ya. Are you going above or below the bridge? I'm in a Black Wooldridge Alaskan XL and will be leaving this Wednesday until Sunday. See you there!

Hey bob I'll see you there! I'm headed down Thursday night Friday morning. I'll be camped at o'brian creek. If your going in the canon don't waist your time at the bridge. The chitna native corp.are letting ppl put in at o'Brian now. I think the guy said $50 for the year to camp and put your boat in at O'brian. Money well spent to keep you out of the sand and in a fresh water creek...

If you are dipping from just below the bridge how long of a handle do you need for your net? Is a 12 foot handle sufficient? Can the river be accessed on both east and west side just below the bridge without paying an access fee?
    thanks

Correct me as I have limited Internet access- Kings start July 1 for sport, is that also the date for dip netting?

My last trip we dipped prior to July 1 and atleast a dozen fat kings but had to return them to the river due to an EO but this years return is much much heavier and I haven't seen any news on that.

I wouldn't expect the kings to be open much past the 17th of June. I wouldn't doubt it if they closed it earlier this year. I've been keeping an ear out just in case we need to zip down there a little earlier.

    Tammy,

No it's not the AOD Flag, I paid twice for one but have yet to recieve it. Kinda just kissed that money off. My flag will be the American Flag (flown upside down to symbolized our country in distress) along with the Alaska Flag... I will keep an eye out for you... "fishon"
