Thread: Petition to Reduce Halibut Bycatch in the Gulf of Alaska

Default Petition to Reduce Halibut Bycatch in the Gulf of Alaska

I usually kind of steer clear of "political" sort of issues on a forum like this, but this one kind of sits dear to my heart. So anyone that is interested in signing a petition from the Alaska Marine Conservation Council for taking action to reduce halibut bycatch in the Gulf of Alaska can do so at this link: http://www.akmarine.org/our-work/con...gulf-of-alaska

Lots of other good stuff on their site as well.

Excellent idea. I'll do that if no one has done it yet.

If I were an AK resident, I'd gladly sign this - bycatch is an issue near and dear to my heart in ALL US fisheries, whether halibut in Alaskan waters, white seabass on the West Coast, amberjack on the Gulf coast, giant bluefin tuna on the East coast or even the salmon fishing in the Great Lakes. If commercial fishermen get to continue wasting massive amounts of valuable fish, there's little chance of rebuilding stocks for future generations to enjoy!

I just got an email from the Alaska Marine Conservation Council and I guess the 15% Halibut Bycatch reduction passed and will take effect 2014. I guess 60+ people testified in strong support of it and the petition we all signed was addressed. 15% is a start, hopefully more to follow in time.
