    Default Herring in Homer

Can you catch herring in Homer outside of the harbor this time of year?

I know legally you can. You can also fish for them with a gillnet as part of the personal use herring fishery.
Not sure I have ever seen much for herring there though at least not right outside the harbor.
I have seen schools of herring in the bay though. Last time I saw what appeared to be a big school of hering we headed towards the diving birds. Before we got close a feeding whale poped up in the middle of the school. We decided to continue on to our butt fishing spot.
I do know Seward has herring that come into the harbor and adjacent areas this time of year and you are allowed a personal use net there too.
