Cant really say? Most Fairbanks guys either go do the 40 mile hunt or Haul rd. I would call ADF&G and talk to the bio and see what they have to say about the trophy quality. I'm sure there are people that hunt them, but from what I know the heard isnt all that large, so they may keep their secrets? Hope this helps some, Chris

Go to Chicken or the Haul Rd. (Dalton) but if you really want to increase your chances on a Boone and Crockett, do a fly-in from Happy Valley, they'll put you in front of the migration for you to intercept within the next day or two...K

Ive encountered one or two true 'trophy quality' caribou in 20A, but not in the quantity that I believe that you'd see them in some of the other areas mentioned earlier.

Thanks. We are not necessarily after BC bulls just mature bulls and just trying to decide if putting in for the herd in 20A is worth it.

So the 40 mile herd has more mature bulls?

Let me tell you about the 20A bou hunt, once F&G gets there quota on bulls, they shut the hunt down and it shuts down fairly quick, thats why I don't hunt it, your best bet will be the forty mile herd, easy access from the Taylor HWY but I will warn you, theres alot of hunters there...My preference...way up North! if you just want mature bull then your chances are real good. ...K

kahahawai: 20A is a drawing hunt, not a registration hunt and since the area reopened to caribou hunting, I have never known it to close by EO before the end of the regulatory season.

There are good bulls in the area and they aren't too hard to find. I'll try posting a pic this evening of some bulls we ran into in 20A a couple of years ago. Hopefully I draw this year!!

Chisana that would be very helpful. It sounds like it might be worth applying for.

Is it doable terrain wise with a bow??

I am assuming with the small herd it is not a migratory hunt at all.

    Default 20a bou

i've hunted in there two times, once to help a tag holder and once on my tag. both times we saw big mature bulls, not record class but very nice... pm me and i'll give you some details on where and how we found to be the best way to go.
