Thread: Rainbow Peak

    Default Rainbow Peak

Just moved up, hiked Flattop last weekend. Not bad but a few hairy spots with the ice near the top. How does rainbow compare? Thinking about heading up tomorrow if the rain holds off.

Rainbow is harder than Flattop, but it's too not hard overall. Follow the trail until it appears to wrap around the side of the mountain at a point. From there you'll follow the ridgeline straight up - it's pretty steep through some loose gravel and alders for a while, then it mellows out once you're above treeline. About 2/3 of the way up you'll have to hang right and move around the base of some cliffs before heading for the top up a loose shale slide. Once to the top ridge it's a short jaunt to the top. There's nothing too technical, but you'll have to figure out the best route as you go.

This is what it looks like shortly after leaving the main trail about 1/3 of the way up:

A little further up the ridge:

You can see the ridge in the distance. This is where we sidehill around the cliffs.

The loose stuff and minor rock scrambling you can expect:

It's a spectacular view from the top, though!
