Kodiak Brown Bear Escapes From Wildlife Refuge
    2012-04-09 17:46:49.556 GMT

    By DAN JOLING
Anchorage, Alaska (AP) -- The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center says a 2-year-old bear Kodiak brown bear is missing from its enclosure near Portage.
Executive director Mike Miller says the center's electric fence was turned off Tuesday for maintenance and something apparently spooked the 300-pound bear named Shaguyik (sheh-GOY-uk).
The center is 40 miles south of Anchorage. It takes in injured and orphaned animals that can be viewed by visitors.
Spokesman Ethan Tyler says the center is working with the Department of Fish and Game to find the blond bear from the air.
He says the center held off announcing the escape on the advice of the department in part to avoid congestion searching for the animal.
The bear was last seen in mountains between Placer and Portage valleys.

There is a faster way off the mountain, might hurt a little though.
