Bumping this back to the top, any one wanting to attend, i was sent extra registration forms, as the AP Chamber was excited to hear that some of the yakers would be back, and they had no info to send them registration forms. I have plenty to send or e-mail if anyone is interested.

Yeah, thanks for posting. It's one of my favorite tournaments and a lot of fun. I'm not sure why they don't promote it a little more. I'll be there and can't wait to see the yakkers out there.

I would love to make it, my work schedule is up in the air right now though, so I don't know if I will be off the slope or not.

You can actually register the evening before the tournament. They hold the auction at the Anchor River Inn the evening before the tournament and you can register there if you need to wait until the last minute. The "cutoff" time for registration is usually about 7 pm or so if I remember correctly.

mail in entry forms must be in by Tuesday May 16th, otherwise you will have to register at the AR Inn, and must be in by 6 pm (not 7) Kardinal tried to PM me the other day but my bax was full, dont know what he has been up to, i doo know he IS planning to fish the derby.
Muttley; i wish they would do a little more promo on the derby myself, it is a lot of fun and really helps the lower penninsula sportsmans assoc., they take about 50 percent of the total pot, and all of that money goes to fund there KIDS programs.

Yeah, they say "6 pm" but in all the years I've been fishing the tourny they keep taking registrations until the auction begins. I think one year it didn't start until about 8 or so. But I wouldn't count on that.

BTW---any of you forum members fishing the tourny my boat is the Pretty Penny. Give me a shout if you pass us by. We're kind of hard to miss because my dog Penny barks at any boat that comes within barking distance of us.

I'll be there! Should have a crew of four to six kayakers entered. The group has been out pretty much every weekend for the past month (not all together but still). We will be ready!

If you all keep this up long enough in a few years maybe they'll start a kayak only king tournament. Or how about a special prize in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby for the biggest halibut caught from a kayak!?

I may just have to break out my AIRE Lynx and join you all one of these days!

Aire Lynx tough to paddle against in a head wind but it's been done. This was the first time ever my friend was in a kayak.

I don't mind extra prizes for non motorized but I'd hate to miss out against the competition from the nice beautiful powerboats I see out there. You will find the kayak fleet has seriously upgraded their equipment this year!

Oh, here's the first king EVER entered into the derby in the 17 year history from a kayak. It also happens to be my friends first ever sport caught king salmon and I went to kindergarten with her in Kenai.

The video is a tad long but it captures most of the battle.

OMG, Rudy, that's great!!! I love the "How Not to Net a Fish" part. That's NEVER happened to me on my boat! What a way to get your first king. How big was it?

Is there a phone number or a place to pick up an application for the derby?

You could try: 235-8139. That's the number for the South Peninsula Sportsmen Assoc. who is one of the sponsors.

I can't even recall. My blogs say 25 so that's the best guess I have. What a blast. The lesson for the day is you have to net your own fish from a yak. Lol.

Yeah, I was going to guess about 30, so 25 is reasonable. Can you imagine trying to deal with one twice that big out there? The biggest one I've ever caught in the Whiskey Gulch area was in the mid-40's but I've heard of bigger ones being caught there and I lost one once that was bigger. That 40+ pounder would strip about 50 yards of line off my reel without so much as a thought. That would probably pull a yakker half way across the inlet!

Thanks polebender! But I think I will wait until the edge of VHF or cell range. A powerboat assist disqualified the fish from a yearlong kayak tournament I am in.

Last year I briefly hooked a king on the Kenai on my yak and instead of jubilation my first thought was "oh oh, now what?". Lol.

Can't wait to latch into something big. It's just a matter of putting in the time!

    See ya down there!
