Default Tough winter for NDBC data buoys

Buoy data looks to be nonexistent, seems like 3/4th of the data buoys in and around South Central either quit transmitting or gone adrift. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/Alaska_inset.shtml

The two main ones in PWS 46081 outside Passage Canal and 46060 are down.

I use these quite a bit so hopefully they will be fixed soon.

WOW. That's gonna suck if they don't get them fixed. It's so nice to give them a call on the hotline before heading all that way out.

Those are my main goto bouys to determine whether we go or not....they have not had a good record of fixing them. Who can we write/email/call to put some pressure on them to get them fixed?

They have been down for quite a while.. its too bad as boating season is coming up and they are not on the repair schedule as of yet. I was hoping that the one in port wells would start working again once it thawed out but no luck I guess. The only contact I could find was this page http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/contact_us.shtml and it does not sound hopful that a comment would make a difference. I did go and post on the NBDC facebook page and will let you know if they reply with any information.

Anyone know who we can call to request they get 46081 (Port Wells) back online? I've sent emails to NWS and Coast Guard with no response. I figure if we can get a bunch of people bugging the right person, they may fix it.

I personally like this station a lot because it looks to be about the only weather station you can check wind in western pws.

Me too. Just cancelled my Friday/Saturday trip. Shifting to Sunday/Monday.

Just got a reply from coast guard. Said go this page and they will get it on maintenance schedule. Perhaps everyone should submit it to get their attention!

I heard via the rumor mill that the one in Port Wells had the batteries stolen off of it and the only way to repair it will be to pull it out with a buoy tender. With the cuts to the .Gov funding I don't expect it to get fixed any time soon. Time to follow the rule... if the wind is blowing out of passage canal you are good to go, if its blowing into the canal... stay home.

I for one am going tomorrow unless the forecast gets much worse. 3 ft and 20 knts is not bad as long as you can beat your way past Port Wells. Culross Pasage here I come.

I suspected a battery thief for the buoy. It quit working less than a month after being repaired last year. Seemed weird.

Again? Well two years ago someone stole the solar panels off it and it was down for a long time. Hope it gets back online soon.

Well. Just heard back from noaa on this. Here is their response. Looks like we'll have it back for second half of season.

"Station 46081 is tentatively scheduled for maintenance in July. This is dependent on confirmation of Coast Guard vessel support and favorable weather conditions. Once cruise has been confirmed, the station will be added to the maintenance page on our site.

Thank you for using our site.

They brought the Port Wells buoy to Whittier. Saw it tied up near the breakwater dock today. Hopefully it is repaired and redeployed soon. Maybe they could put some kind of surveillance cam on it.
