    Default Hooters?

Anyone been hearing Hooters in the Juneau area yet? I heard a few from the water on Friday afternoon by Howard Bay but its such a long run in the open skiff...

I got one off the road system today. It's the only one we heard for about four miles of generally productive woods. It's still a good three weeks early.

Yeah I figured it was still early but this winter seemed long, I've been tromping around quite a bit and have not heard a thing in Juneau still, wishing for more "springy" weather. This time last year I found some before they were hooting way up around 2000 feet in the alpine hanging out with the ptarmigan. This year there is so much snow all those scrub trees were completely covered.

Early bird gets the worm but the early hooter gets shot eh?! good work.

I've started hearing them consistently above my house here in Juneau. I think now would be a better time to start poking around...

I went looking again today and last week. It's still winter in most of the woods, I haven't heard much since. Walking across avalanche chutes in the sun without snowshoes is no fun...

If it keeps shining like this, next weekend should be great.

Anyone ever hunt Thunder Mountain? I always hear them up there early, maybe use a pellet gun.

Since it seems a little early, I would try some areas that have south and west facing areas, or at least a good deal of western exposure...just a thought.

They were really hooting today. It's really picked up in the past week.

Very nice. On my list for sure. Need to do some research. I really want to take on over my dogs point.

This is the kind of thing upland dreams are made of. Congratulations. More pics, more pics! It'll probably contribute to the local economy within the next couple of years.....

Are they huntable with a dog? Looks like most go after them with .22.

If I go after them with a 22 it's always for a head shot. But yes, you can hunt them with dogs and scatterguns.....

I generally see sooty grouse sitting well up in trees, so at least in the area I hunt, traditional wingshooting is not a viable option. Sniping with .22 lr seems most effective.
