Default Ruger No. 1 barrel change out

I have a couple of early pre-prefix Ruger No.1 in .243 Win but no .30-06. I just won a nice early .30-06 No. 1 barrel with front sight and barrel band on gunbroker so I'll be ready to make the change in the near future.

I know the extractors are the same and the headspace should be dang close so those should be not be a problem IF the barrels index up correctly. Question is: does anyone have any experience with swapping or rebarreling Ruger No 1s? Hopefully they aren't as bad to change barrels in as the Ruger DA revolvers

I've rebarrelled a couple No1's, and your suspicions are generally correct. If the barrel indexes and is tight, then its time for a headspace check. The barrels don't always index though. They can be set back a turn and the chamber touched up, but that, of course, is more work.

Ruger does a very good job on the No. 1s - I don't know why the can't make a Redhawk with the barrel screwed in straight!
