    Default Forum Search Tool

    Perhaps this belongs somewhere else, but there seems to be a lot of moderators here.

    The search function really needs help. Particularly, it drops any word that is three letters or less. 'Elk' cannot be searched for. The same thing occurs with numbers it seems. The 'advanced search' function has no way to override this. Many lakes, rivers and places have names that are 'too small, too common, or too long.' Is there any way to get around this or fix this? Thank you.

    I'll pass along the question to our tech guru. For what it's worth, when I really want to search for something on here, I turn to Google. It's a shame, but I think the limitation is with the vBulletin software. We used to have an embedded Google search feature, but at some point along the line it was lost. I'll also ask if there is any way we can reinstate that feature, as it was much better.

    I have good results using the advanced search feature in google searching with key words and limiting the search to the forums.outdoorsdirectory.com domain

    Default here's a leg up

    Of course he could do it with one arm tied behind his back, but (assuming you pay him hourly) the HTML snippet below should lessen your charge. All he has to do is copy that, and paste it into one or more of your page template files on your server.

    And then, each time vBulletin has a major update, he'll have to do that again probably.

    <!-- Begin SiteSearch Google Code Snippet -->
    <FORM method=GET action="http://www.google.com/search">
    <input type=hidden name=ie value=UTF-8>
    <input type=hidden name=oe value=UTF-8>
    <TABLE bgcolor="#FFFFFF" align="center">
    <tr>
    <td>
    <A HREF="http://www.google.com/">
    <IMG SRC="http://www.google.com/logos/Logo_40wht.gif" border="0" ALT="Google"></A>
    </td>
    <td>
    <INPUT TYPE=text name=q size=31 maxlength=255 value="">
    <INPUT type=submit name=btnG VALUE="Google Search"> <font size=-1>
    <input type=hidden name=domains value="forums.outdoorsdirectory.com"><br>
    <input type=radio name=sitesearch value=""> Web Search
    <input type=radio name=sitesearch value="forums.outdoorsdirectory.com" checked> Site Search <br> </font>
    </td>
    </tr>
    </TABLE>
    </FORM>
    <!--End SiteSearch Google Code Snippet -->

    Or, forum mgmt here might choose to remove the radio button that lets the user toggle between searching the Internet and searching only the forums, and instead just hardwire it to only search the forums. Since that's only a 20 second modification to the code above, I won't waste the bytes of your storage providing that version also.

    (This thread might want to be moved into the Forum Tips area.)

    The search function on here has been broken for a very long time and just gets worse with each forum upgrade....
