has anyone been using the new garmin radar and fish finder units? im wondering if they have improved the quality over the last few years. seems like most everyone i have asked says their chartplotter is great but the radar and ff are lacking.

I have a 4212 bundle, the weak part is sonar and slow redraw of charts. Radar is very good. The bundle came with the boat. If you price everything out the bundle is pretty spendy, 2 monitor, thru hull, radar, gps, upgraded charts..

I have a 4212 as well with the G2 charts, and the maps are great. I have notice that the bottom holding has improved over the last couple of years as I have installed software updates. Generally it will hold bottom down to 400-600 feet, which is plenty. The radar is intuitive, but I really don't have a way to compare it with the other options. I have an Airmar 1Kw transducer, which I think has as much to do with quality as anything else. If you are really interested in top quality fish finding, I would look at the new spread spectrum sounders that are coming out. They supposedly out perform all of the single band transducers independent of brand.

Jrogers, Is that G2 Vision chip really worth the money? I've been thinking about getting it, but can't break out the wallet just yet.

I have the chip and it works great to find passages or structures. Its a bit hard to swallow at purchase time for something so small but its a great tool to have on the boat as least IMO

I purchased the g2 for the bathometric charts, it is rarely used. It entertains my guests.

I have no idea if the price is right, but thought I'd pass it along.
