Default Question for you commercial Gillnetters

I see a lot of water taxies and charter boats use outboards, why doesn’t the commercial fleet use them on their bow pickers? I understandthe reasoning between jets vs. outdrives. I just wondering if there was a specific reason why they don't use outboards?

    Thanks for your time

The few i have seen never seemed to work out, maybe they don't back up good enough when setting the net. Outboards ain't cheap and maybe they don't last long when pushing loads of fish. When you load a boat down the outboard will be low in the water and it might get flooded/sunk under water, i have seen and fished on some herring skiffs that had the outboards mounted on a crank up rack so as you sunk the boat with herring you could crank the engines up but when cranked up like that the boat wouldn't back up very well.

No I don't have a project boat. I've been looking at gillnetters for a while and have never seen one with ob. I figured there was a good reason.
