Default hunting dates dilemma, what would you do?

    Hey all,

I am in the process of putting something together for this year and am having some conflicting thoughts with what dates to go.
Am headed to the Alaska range to hunt sheep and caribou. We would like to go in for 14 days but can't decide on dates.

Either the beginning of the season from the 9th of August on............ or split the days at the end of August through beginning of Sept.

If any of you would have a preference what days would it be and why would you pick those dates? I am looking for your thoughts to see what I have left out in my thought process.

    Thanks all
    Jason

If it were me, I would target the late end of the available time. Bugs are one issue, but meat care is the biggest. The later you go, the easier it will be to keep meat longer. If you go early and get something near the start of the trip, it is likely that you would have to cut the trip short to get meat taken care of.

I have done 2 sheep hunts and 4-5 caribou hunts up there. Bugs have never been a problem. Some people just don't know how to cook em correctly I guess.

I would go early, and be on the spot on the 8th or 9th of August. I haven't seen bugs as a major issue, but just be prepared with the right meat care stuff and you'll be fine. That way you don't have to worry about being snowed out or weathered into camp quite as bad, and you'll get more hunting in. Good Luck!

I plan on going early once I draw my TMA sheep tag.

    Good Luck!

I'll be available until early Oct. Late Aug I can drop you off and pick you up and possibly hunt with you as many times we only get 1 day a week of fishing time then. After about the 20th of Sept I'm done with fishing so the next two weeks after that are good for me. Let me know when you firm up your schedule.

    Default TMA

I'm planning on getting the TMA... heh heh. I've already booked the same valley I had in 2007 and paid 40 mile. Only took me 20 years to win the first time, so figure I'm due again.. I'll ask them to save you a tag too!
