May 9th. I'm pulling for a warm April down low and spectacular corn snow up high!

Geeeesh, around early May I would leave Chugiak High after the final bell and I would go down to fire lake and sit there and just stare at the ice waiting for it to fall through. The g/f just didn't understand why I didn't want to ..... I'll leave that to your imagination. I remember one year about 1/4 of the lake ice fell through and for dam sure I was down there in my canoe throwing lures and herring at any spot that could possibly hold a pike.

When I was younger I used to log every fishing trip. I was always eager to get out and fish as soon as possible. LOL I have about five years of "when the fire lake and beach lake ice fell through" logged in a book. With that said my guess is

    May 11th

I even have several pics of me from ADN when I used to fish Ship Creek every freaking day.

Winter's icy grip may be breaking up sooner than expected...

While driving across the A Street Bridge and looking up toward the dam this afternoon, I was surprised to see a good portion of Ship Creek flowing unobstructed.

Just yesterday morning, it appeared frozen solid and full of massive icebergs.

I realize that the tide activity in that area has a lot to do with the stream's changing appearance, but it certainly seems to be a clear sign that spring is working its magic at last!

Ship creek has a hot water feed at reeve bvld. from the hatchery so it stays open most of the time most winters.

Not anymore they don't. Both the Fort Rich and Elmendorf power plants have been shut down, so no more free hot water.

There's going to be a spiffy new bridge by fire creek. Those frost heaves sure got annoying.

Anyways, our dates are quickly sneaking up on us.

Saw a ski plane taking off on Lower Firelake on Sunday on the way back from the gun show. Earlier the better.

When is the completion date for that new overflow at Lower Fire lake? Drove past last weekend and there was plenty of ice....so I'm thinking May 15th.
