    Default 45acp dies

Looking at getting set up to start handloading 45acp. I am a huge Hornady fan so I was looking at there dies. They offer two different ones, roll crimp or taper crimp. RCBS doesnt specify what there die is. So now I am confussed. I do 95% rifle loading so the pistol loads are pretty fuzzy to me when they have options. What the heck is a roll crimp and what is the best prefered die?

I have used the RCBS dies for several years with no issues. Most of my reloading equipment is RCBS so it a 'non' issue for me. For me I need a tapered 'crimp' to work properly in my 1911. Besides I do not remember seeing a crimp groove on any of the bullets that I have used.

You'll want the taper crimp die for 45acp. Crimp is not really what you want, just straighten out the case or slightly smaller like .001. The acp headspaces on the mouth of the case, so roll crimps don't work so good. A roll crimp does just that rolls the mouth over and diggs into the bullet.

I appreciate the advise. Of course the taper crimp is the one out of stock at Cabelas!

You want a lee factory crimp die. turn it down just enough to take the bell out of the mouth. I usually set it at .001 below the case wall just behind the mouth. The fcd also ensures the entire case is within saami spec.
