    Default Kenai Motor Size

I know the upper end for horse power on the Kenai, I was wondering what is the smallest horsepower that will navigate the current on the lower river. I have a 15 hp Honda longshaft kicker motor on my 24' bayliner but would like to double up and put it on a 12-14' klamath style boat. Does anyone have experience with a smaller motor.

My old Johnson 25hp worked real good on the 15' Klamath I used to have. I wouldn't have wanted anything less though. I don't know if that helps.

I had a 20hp on a 15' smokercraft semi v and with three guys it was marginal.....probably made about 10 mph upstream and plowed up a big wake.

Your combo shouldn't do too bad ~ just don't expect to pass any guides. I used to run a 15 hp Chrysler on a 14' jon boat & a 15 hp Suzuki on a 14' Sea King that both did okay on the lower river (Eagle Rock & down). After a couple of years, I moved up to a 17' Hewescraft with a 50/35 hp Yamaha & was really happy with that combo until ADF&G closed silver fishing in 96 & we started going to Seward & Whittier and have not been back since. Just for fun one year a friend & I took an 8' fiberglass boat with a 7 1/2 hp Eska down to Eagle Rock to see what it would do. We had a lot of fun, but there was a whole bunch of people there that laughed their ******* off at us!

Heck I'd use a 2.5 on a 6 foot zodiak and I bet I could outrun some guide boats, its all about weight to power ratio
I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.
