    Default Mushing-training-teaching-trying

Just thought I would update on my puppies, got them to pull my little neice and her friend two weeks ago. Two puppies at a time, that day they did good. Here are a few pictures.

    Getting them ready to pull.

    Pulling my little helper Summer.

She is a tough girl, she was dragging before I stopped the dogs to get her up. She didn't want to let go, so she dragged. She is hooked on mushing.

    How exciting!

    Default Last Sat.

This time on sat. we used three dogs together. Wheew! That was more work. My little neice and brother decided to take another dog which made my puppies misbehave, so before we started I had my sister take the dog home. By then it went better.

    My nephew Timmy

My little helper Summer, she wanted to keep going. She has these big
plans to mush to Shaktoolik to see her grandparents to show them the
    puppies.

Now I need to find a good sled for myself, to try see what I could do.
I got two that looks like will be the leaders.
    Enjoy!

Great to see that the pups are coming into their own and that you're getting the kids out there too! Thanks for sharing the pics, really neat to see that country out west, lots of windblown wide-open stuff. That glare ice in the one pic with Summer is hard to stay upright on sometimes...the sled gets going sideways and then you hit a patch of snow and wipe out. Started my kids early and mushing has always been one of their favorite ways of getting outdoors.

Looks like a blast! Thanks for sharing.

Mark made the comment on the sled sliding sideways on the ice. Do some sleds have a skag like on a snowmachine ski? Or would that not work becuase you need them to slide when going around corners?

    Cheers

bushrat, it gets windblown here alright, but this yr. it had to do with the 40 degree weather we had one day in Feb. I was disappointed cause I didn't run the puppies for almost three weeks, was afraid of all the ice we have.

FarmerGrant, No, don't use skags. I have alot to learn yet. If they use skags, I wouldn't know.

    Smile!

Aw what pretty pups! They've gotten a lot bigger then the last pictures I saw of them. I just got my son on a double sled a couple of weeks ago. He's 8. He loved it!

Thank you 1stimestar, it is awesome to see the little ones interested. My niece was disappointed this past week-end, she didn't get to go mushing. We had plans to go but I went on a hunting trip for three days. So she counted the puppies while her mom fed them. Smile!

I flew to KKA, the trail too rough to go alone, lucky me, my Mom invited me to use her snowmachine. No, my brother got one caribou, and two wolves. Just being there was a experience. Awww, and I wanted to stay longer. Got Pics. my upload is being slow, so until next time.

Because I told you, I used my mothers snowmachine, he wouldn't keep up with me.

Wonder which is exciting, trying to hunt from a dogsled or from a cabin?
I know hunting from a cabin is fun but a dogsled, something to try. If there is a will there is a way.

That first pic looks like it was up east fork, on the east side of it. Is that where you got the wolves?
No sunlight. Could you track? Or did you binocular these 2?
Your brother got both? Where were you?

We were planning on going north fork but since there was other hunters, we decided to cross east fork and drive towards bear creek. Yah,we glassed every once in a while. Since we didn't see anything but caribou my brother got one and we butchered it. Decided to go on, since earlier we seen something near bear creek and wanted to go check it out, thats when we found fresh tracks. I took off my sled and followed the tracks while my brother went looking over the other side. He seen the wolf standing really still at a distance, went to find me, and he showed me where it was. So since I knew where he was going, I went back to get the sled. By the time I got to where the first wolf was laying, he pulled up with the second one. We tried looking for more, didn't find the other two tracks until we were leaving for home. Here when we glassed around we thought we seen a fox, turns out it was a wolverine, seen the tracks. There was a little sunshine, it got white out by the time we got other side star mountain. Even just tagging along was a blast. Seeing new places!

You went to get the sled? Let him have the fun? That's not like you...........hahahaha.
By the time you got to the first one, he was coming back with the 2nd..............can't do that on a dog sled!
All the time I spend running around here checking a trapline, I almost never see good stuff like that to catch. Maybe I should move to kka? Are you available as a guide.............??????????
Bob H. has a tent frame up North fork. Perfect spot to camp and run a dog team line. Could even run over to bear creek shelter cabin. Bet there's lots of lynx, wolverine, wolves if the bou are around.
OK back to dogs. I'll quit asking questions.
