    Default Questions about Valdez

    Hello,
My wife and I are spending the last week of July in Alaska and I am researching places I can fish from shore. I am not particular as to what type of fish I catch. Will not be keeping any. Just want to have my string pulled.

We will be spending a couple of days in Hope and I was considering going to Valdez and spending the remainer of our week there. I know that the pinks are good in Hope on even years but I fished there a couple of years ago and liked it so much I want to spend some time there even if the pinks are not there in great numbers. Just a great place to relax. My questions are:
    1. Do the pinks show up in good numbers in Valdez, even on odd years?
    2. How is the halibut fishing in Valdez? Seems that Homer is the best
place to go, but we don't have time to go both to Homer and Valdez
and I can fish for pinks while at Valdez.
    3. I would appreciate a referral for a good Valdez halibut guide.
    4. How would the halibut fishing in Valdez be different than in Homer?
Have to go further out? Smaller fish?, etc.

I have found this forum to be a great help for people like us who need a little help. Everyone has been most helpful and I would appreciate any replys you could offer.

    Thanks in advance.

    Yes
    Decent
    No clue
Homer is Better but Valdez is pretty good especially if your boat does long runs
I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.

Default Sorry Charlie, was splitting wood.

    1. Do the pinks show up in good numbers in Valdez, even on odd years?

Doesn't matter. Three years ago we had a guess-ta-mate of 27 million pinks return. They show up every fall.

    2. How is the halibut fishing in Valdez? Seems that Homer is the best
    place to go.

Both places have bragging rights. Our contest winner last year was 343 pounds. Several 200+ fish there too.

    Default halibut in VDZ...

I seem to remember catching some pretty nice halibut just outside the narrows last July....

    Default pinks and butts

At that time you can simply fish from shore near allison point and I guarentee you will catch more pinks than you have ever thought about. If you work at it hard and long (all tide) and get lucky with the silvers showing a little early you might even hook into one of those. The earliest I hooked up one at Allison was July 26th, however that only happened once. Second Dave Bruss and No Excuses. I think usually though he only books the whole boat and is usually booked by now. Good luck

    Default Number

Thanks for posting Dave's number. I looked through the Valdez phone book (all 42 pages) in several areas and could not find it.

Yes, Dave is usually on the fish.

I always carry his card in my wallet. You know in case there is an emergency. Like having to catch big fish.
