I got one on Oct 17 two years ago and he was all by himself. But last year they were loaded pretty heavy between Galbraith Lake and Toolik; however, there were plenty of people chasing during that time. Aside from the obvious caribou in the wide open, search some of the valleys and plateau's just south of Galbraith and you can find some in there for sure. Expect snow and both times I have been there in October the wind was howling pretty good!

You are also in the rut and rutty bull is nasty. I did kill my only Haul Rd. bull south of Coldfoot (who'd a thunk it) on Nov 1st and he was not rutty at all.
