Or... next time just bring an electric fence and not worry about it.

And what kind of camper doesn't bring a sleeping bag and sleeps on the floor of the tent fully clothed with the door unzipped?

Which is why I like floorless tarps. If you're in a tent with a floor it can be collapsed around you and you get wrapped up like an enchilada and can't move. When I use tents with floors I sleep with my knife by my head so I can cut my way out of the tent, but the floorless tarps are more to my liking unless its really bad weather.

I know the 3 kids involved. Good kids....not partiers. Can't say what kind of camp they keep.

FWIW, the scenario where the bear comes after me in the tent is one where I would prefer to respond by bullet(s) than by pepper-spraying the inside of my tent. Also, this story seems like another of many examples defying the conventional wisdom that, when a bear (black or brown) attacks, there is no way that you could have time to get off more than one shot, and will be lucky to get even one shot off before you are turned bloody smudge on the tundra.

I too know the boy and his folks, and grandparents. The reason he wasn't using a bag was probably due the the temperatures, it was still warm then. Don't know why he didn't have a firearm, I'll ask next time I see him. I do know that his father carries almost 24/7, only tries to hide it while at the newspaper.
The bear was a second year grizzly cub. I am wondering where momma bear is at? The two cubs don't seem to be fending for themselves very well, but they are cleaning up gutpiles from us successfull hunters in that area. DM 734 opened up on the 15th of August there.

    Just my thoughts,
    Chris
