    Default 40 Mile caribou

Saw my first 40 mile bull of the year today. If only they hadn't changed the opening date in Zone 1....2 years ago he would've been mine.

A pilot buddy tells me they're still way over by the Charlie River area.

That's not good news for those of use who want to hunt off the Steese.

It looks like fly in to zone 2 is the way to go.

    Default the herd

I got skunked last year hunting steese during that 24 hr only open period. Tons of hunters and I didn't see anybody in the area get one. On the drive back to Fairbanks, I saw two being loaded up at the road but that's it. They never did limit out on any of the zones last year. I believe the herd was in zone 2 the entire time.

I think F&G will make sure the herd is long gone before they open it, like last year, at least in the easily accessible areas. When F&G said the herd was all over the road a pilot friend of mine flew up there and didn't see squat. Don't care what anybody says, and they will, but the herd wasn't where F&G said it was.

The recording says all the caribou are hanging out in zone 2 again this year. That sucks if true. Regardless I'll be up around Chicken next weekend with a few people, so we'll see how it goes.

Last year the same reports were coming through, but our season lasted 5 minutes. Regardless of what the ecording says, hunt. Your chances of seeing game are always better in the field than in your living room.

And to think you didn't believe me when I told you they were out there.
