Default Tent Camping in Fairbanks Area

Planning a short trip to Fairbanks to see the Tanana Valley Fair this week. Probably leaving tomorrow and would like to camp for a couple nights. I know there is a state campground on the Chena, right in town. As long as it's not full up, that would be fine. But I also heard there is camping right near the fair itself. Anyone know about that? Do they accept tenters, or is it RV's only? Is it completely exposed like a lot of RV sites, or are the campsites tucked away in the woods a bit?

I camped once, years ago, at the Chena Lakes facility. That still decent for tenters? And how far out of Fairbanks is it? I can't remember much about it 20 years later. Any other ideas that would be fairly close?

Am not aware of any camping immediately proximal to the fair.... DNR campground on the Chena is an option as you stated. If anything, Chena Lakes will probably be nicer than whatever you remember from many years ago. They've made alot of improvements out there over the years. Chena Lakes to the Fairground is about 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Plan for rain!

There is a campground immediately to the west of the fairgrounds, unsure of the name though. It's tucked into the woods nicely. There's also the Chena river rec area campground on University ave....again, woodsy.

    Enjoy!
