    Default thermostat

Can I bypass the thermostat on my 2002 8 hp Mercury? Why is there even one on such a small motor? I took it off and the copper is very green. Does it need to be replaced? Thanks for the help.

Yes you can just remove it.
Itís there because the engineers who design the engine felt it was needed. I would clean it up or put in a new one. You can test it by putting in a pot heat it up and see what temperature it open at. Why did you remove it?

I removed it because last night I replaced the entire water pump, tried it tonight, and no water. So I heard there might be a thermostat, found it, removed it and tried the motor and there was water. At least I knew my pump job worked. That is why I took it out. Can I leave it out permanently?

Running the engine without the thermostat will be detrimental to fuel economy and power. Install a new T-stat and feel good about it
