Thread: Life of smoked salmon

    Default Life of smoked salmon

I just smoked a bunch of my silvers and wondering how long it lasts in the freezer and the fridge.

Also, what is the best way to preserve smoked salmon?

Although smoking is a form of preserving, I vacuum seal mine and freeze it. I don't know how long it lasts, but I can tell you that I've eaten some of my '09 smoked salmon this year and it was just fine. If you want some reassurance then go into one of the gift shops in town and check the packaging date on the smoked salmon that they sell to tourists. Keep in mind that their stuff isn't even refrigerated.

I vacuum seal mine, but it never lasts long. My family eats it like candy!

Yep, vacuum seal and freeze. Stuff lasts forever in that state.

I always keep a pack in the fridge as well. Even after the seal is broken, it stays good for a surprisingly long time. Odds are you will eat it before it ever goes bad.

Canning it will preserve it for a long time and no need for refrigeration.
