    Default Skiing the ANWR

    Hi,

I am planning to ski through the ANWR, from Fort Yukon to Kaktovik. I think I will follow the Sheenjek River north, then follow the Kungakut on the other side of Brooks Range. What do you think of that? Is there any other route that is more preferable?

    Thanks,
    Eivind

Do you know how the watershed crossing is from Chandalar to Hulahula? It looks fairly alright on the Arctic and Mt. Michelson maps I've got, crossing at Guilbeau Pass.

I backpacked from the Sheenjek to the Achilik this summer and I can tell you that the pass into the Kungakut drainage is not bad and probably one of the easier crossings across the divide around there.

around what month are you doing this?

I'd fly into Arctic Village on the scheduled flight. Start there instead of Fort Yukon.

    I crossed that pass
a few years back and it was fairly easy as I recall.

Good to hear. Have been reading about your trip before, well done!

    Why?

Planning to do it from mid February to mid March. I know it's really cold then, but it's also the most beautiful time of the year, I think. Have done 2 months of backcountry skiing in Alaska from February to April before, having 55 below.

Cruising the forum and found this thread. Did you ever do the trip? If so to hear about how it was would be interesting.
