Default more on volvo shifting problems

Had an earlier post on delay on shifting. This is my old boat that I just sold. Buyer said last trip the outdrive was delaying when shifting into forward. Reverse was fine. Said he adjusted the cable and it seemed to help. I took the boat out to PWS this weekend. No problems the first day, shifted smooth at the dock. Ran to Naked Is, boat ran smooth. I then started to experience the delay, at first the delay was about a few seconds and would shift smoothly, shifting in reverse was no problem. The forward problem got worse throughout the day, to the point where it would only shift if you put some rpms with the throttle...a little gas and it would shift, but would do so hard. Cut the trip short and headed back to whitter. Not sure what to make of it.

Common problem on duoprops, its the shifting cone getting glazed, cure is to have it cleaned up by lapping the cone with valve griding compound. Older drives had bronze cones that were more prone to glazing than the newer drives that have steel cones.

Thanks Steve, sounds like a project for a Volvo mechanic? Is the cone located in the upper gear housing?

Yup its in the top box, you don't have to take the whole drive off. If you need a good guy to do the work give me a call.
