    Default SPOT Connect

Anyone using the SPOT connect in the field yet?

I just puchased one yesterday. Have sent a couple of "test" email and text messages with it and it seems to work as advertised. Hopefully going to be a less expensive ($160 for the SPOT and $130 for the yearly service) alternative to a Sat phone. The only down sides I can see is that it wont receive text and email, only sends. And it wont do voice communication. But for staying in touch letting people know where you are and whats going on it looks to be pretty cool. Really wondering if anyone has used it out in the Aluetians, overseas like South Aftrica or South America?

I have one of the original SPOT and have used it on several hunts with great success. I have thought about buying one of the new smaller ones also. My son sent me Spot messages from Afghanistan (sp) from the SPOT I gave him. Also got messages from other countries where he stopped going over.

I have used mine all over AK and never had any problems. I do wish I could receive msgs but it works great for keeping the wife from worrying. I used it a couple years ago to send a msg to our pilot when we were ready for pick-up in Kodiak, it was very nice to know we were getting picked up the next morning as long as the weather held.

Curious, since its a send only tool is there anyway to know that your sent message actually went out?

When I sent my "test" text and email's, I sent the first to myself so I could be sure that it was working, then I sent the next to my brother so he could confirm. The device has a light that blinks when it is sending...

The Iphone battery life s the biggest problem I can see. I was thinking about getting one but I think I will forgo the ability to send messages and just use something that only requires regular old batteries.
