Default Moose Scent Balls (Baitm907 your mail box is full)

Are you going to be selling the moose scent balls this season? When should I be hanging them, what part of the season do you think they work best? How much are they and where can I pick them up. I'm going to start archery hunting the 10th of August in the Valley and would love a little edge.

    thanks

Don't do it. You may use scents and lures for ungulates but may NOT use Bait Balls, even if put out of reach.
squab (probably of Scandinavian descent; skvabb, meaning "loose, fat flesh") is a young domestic pigeon or its meat

Interesting! The attorneys/F&G would probably have fun with the phrase as it specifically says, "Except Scent lures may be used for ungulates, and for black bears only under a black bear baiting permit." I can interpret this statement a variety of ways. What does this statement really mean?

The regulation (page 18 of the 2011-2012 regulations) states that salt licks and scents can not be used for taking moose, except scent lures can be used for ungulates. Page 18 also has intentional feeding of moose restrictions.

In some areas, bear baiting (bear baiting station regulations) is allowed till Oct 15. So lets say someone is at a legal bear baiting station (baited for bears), also has a scent lure for moose, is calling moose, and a legal bull came in. Would the bull be legal to shoot? I would be curious to know the details of any precedents?

I just briefly spoke with the F&G Statewide Enforcement Specialist... and posed a similar question.

    Per our discussion, you can
    1) use scents to hunt moose (anywhere).
    2) use scents to hunt black bears under the black bear baiting permit.

It seems you can do both (scent moose and hunt bear) at the same time. I tried to get a list of materials that would be considered bait to a moose but no list was made available. Enforcement would likely occur when the moose has been shot and lie in whether the moose was attracted to the scent or the bait. If you shoot a moose and the law enforcement officer cuts the stomach open to look at the contents and discovers bait, then they would have good evidence that you were baiting the moose. If no bait, the officer's case would likely lose momentum.

So if you hang a bait ball, you'll want to hang it at a bait station. If you're hunting moose at that bait station, you'll want to be sure the moose can't eat it or the drippings that may fall to the ground.

thats why you use gel balls... High scent and they dissipate quickly
