Visiting Seward on the 18th for Make-A-Wish...need help packing!
My son Garrett lost his leg to bone cancer in April after a two year battle. He is doing great on his new prosthetic. Make-A-Wish is sending him (and the rest of the family; wife, daughter 12, and myself) on an Alaskan Adventure July 18th-25th. We do not know our itinerary yet (Tuesday hopefully), but we know we will be in Seward. I think we will be doing some fishing (Garrett want to fish both Salmon and Halibut), Kayaking, and possibly some hiking. We also may do some short hiking on our own if we have some unplanned time. You can follow his blog here if you are interested:
We need some help packing! Make-A-Wish will supply the equipment for our adventures, but not sure what type of clothes and equipment we should bring in addition. I will be taking a GPS and cameras for certain; including a waterproof camera. What about bears? If we hike around Seward will we need bear spray?
Also, any short (less than 5 mile and moderate/easy) hikes anyone would recommend? Any hints to make this a great trip for a great kid would be appreciated.
Halibut and Salmon should be no problem... depending on the boat/capt etc, perhaps there could be some Ling Cod and Sea Bass included in the catch... bring windproof/water repellant jackets... Some days in Seward are warm enough for short sleeves and shorts, but my experience has always been long sleeved shirts and long pants were more comfortable...
