Thread: Homer King Derby

    Cool Homer King Derby

Talked to the Harbor master yesterday and the harbor is full of ice right now which jeopardizes the weekend of the 24th for all of you that might want to take your vessels down there. They will postpone it for another weekend it the ice doesn't dissapate. Hopefully the pass will be clear. Don't forget your chains.

    Unhappy yep, no joke...

5+" in the back of the harbor, you can walk on it. the ramp is out of the question.
if we don't get some warmer temps pronto we are in trouble for the tourney.
gotta be in the 30's at least during the day, and then a wind to blow it away so it doesn't suck back into the harbor.

Man that blows. I've been wanting to go down there and win that tourney for years. The boat and gear are ready to go. Here's to warmer weather. Thanks for the info.

    Default harbor ice

Was on the spit today and noticed some ice is now moveing out, with pretty good leads starting to show in the harbor.Provided the temps stay up and bigger tides next weekend. the 24th is looking good.

    Default Homer Derby question

I assume these are winter kings for this derby, right?
What kind of catch rate is there this time of year?
Do you troll near the harbor, or way out, along the shoreline heading towards Anchor Point?
Hike faster. I hear banjo music.

Well, there are numerous places to troll for them. I tend to stay around the islands where I target some of the structure in the area. Along the shore westward there is a couple nice areas you can try. These are feeder kings which normally don't get too big. If you can make it down you'll have a good time. I've fished for them a bit but this will be the first time I'll take the ole' Tabasco down. I'll keep it there for awhile and then drive it around to Whittier where I tend to do most of my fishing.

    Default Derby Website

Has this posted: "Winter King Salmon Tournament Alert:
Due to the accumulation of considerable ice in the Homer Harbor, there is a possibility the tournament may have to be postponed. The decision on postponement will be made and announced on Friday, March 16."

But I'm hoping Fishon's comment hold true: leads in the ice and big tides will move it out.

BTW, the "islands" he refers too are Yukon, Hesketh...

    like Shackleton's "Endurance"...
i chipped out a block and it was an honest 6" thick.
a couple boats nearer the mouth of the harbor have gotten out, but the ramp is out of the quastion right now.

    Thumbs down no significant change...

    in the ice or forecast.
hopefully something will form in the south pacific and blow up, but don't see anything on the satellite.
couple boats got out from "D" and "C" floats last week, but caught zip...
everything beyond about "J" float is frozen tighter than a (insert favorite aphorism here).

    Default postponement???

word is that if postponed it will be by 2 weeks so as not to conflict with the sportsman's show or north council meetings.

    Default A-man

Worst part of that is if they put it off until the 14th, that is Arctic Man weekend. Oh well guess there is no way to keep EVERYONE happy.
keep us informed Homer Dave, your input helps those of us stuck elsewhere other than Homer!

From the web cams looks like Mud Bay froze right back over, amazing how a little wind pushed that ice back even bieng cold.

I guess Global warming is not a factor in this area?

    Talking it's not "global warming"...

it is called "global climate change"...some models predict colder drier winters and wetter summers in SW AK...looks like they may be right.
    ...but that's another thread...
